Astronomers say a rare asteroid will be visible to the naked eye during a rare celestial event. According to NASA, asteroid 99942 Apophis—named after the Egyptian god of chaos, darkness, and fire—is expected to safely pass near Earth on April 13, 2029. At that time, it will come within one twelfth the average distance between Earth and the Moon, even closer than many geosynchronous orbit satellites. This will be one of the closest approaches by any object to Earth ever recorded. NASA states that, provided weather conditions permit, this passage will be visible to the naked eye across the Eastern Hemisphere.
