Knife Attack on Train Shocked the UK, but the UK Transport Minister Refused to Implement Security Checks
On November 1 local time, a knife attack occurred on a train from Doncaster to London in the UK, resulting in 10 people being injured. This incident has deepened the public's concerns about security issues in the UK, with many calling on the UK government to enhance security measures at train stations, including the installation of metal detectors and security gates.
However, British officials rejected this suggestion, insisting that it "is not the right choice." According to a report by The Guardian on the 3rd, UK Transport Minister Heidi Alexander stated that using metal detectors for security checks at train stations would make passengers "unable to live normally." She said the UK government will consider other options to improve the safety of the public transportation network.
Alexander said that after the knife attack on the 1st, UK traffic police will patrol train stations across the country to reassure passengers. However, when asked about the suggestion of installing security gates or equipping metal detectors at train stations, Alexander responded: "I don't think the detectors are the right choice."
She claimed, "I understand why you're asking this question, and I understand that many people may be curious. We have thousands of train stations across the UK, and these stations have multiple entrances and platforms. We do need to take wise and effective measures to ensure the safety of the public transport network, but we cannot let everyone be unable to live."
Alexander said the UK government will review other options. She cited an example, stating that after the 2017 London Bridge terrorist attack, where the attacker drove a van into pedestrians, the UK government installed anti-collision barriers on pedestrian walkways on several bridges in London.
When asked what other security measures the UK government could take, Alexander insisted that UK public transportation is "a low-crime environment overall," and "our trains are one of the safest forms of public transportation, with only 27 criminal incidents per 1 million passenger journeys."
