Russian Ministry of Defense: Groups Similar to AUKUS May Evolve into an "Indo-Pacific Alliance," Becoming an Asian NATO

Deputy Minister of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Oleg Savelyev, stated at the 12th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting with Dialogue Partners (ASEAN Plus) that new closed groups similar to AUKUS may soon evolve into an "Indo-Pacific Alliance," becoming an organization directly opposing NATO in Asia.

Savelyev said: "We are especially concerned about Western efforts under the so-called 'Indo-Pacific Strategy' to actively weaken, restructure, and replace the security architecture centered on ASEAN that has been formed in the Asia-Pacific region for many years, replacing it with new closed groups such as the Australia-United Kingdom-United States (AUKUS) partnership, the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD), the 'Indo-Pacific Quad' (SQUAD), and the U.S.-Japan-Philippines Trilateral Mechanism (JAPHUS). The activities of these groups have led to new lines of division and sources of tension in the region. Given the growing military presence of NATO in Asia, we believe these groups are likely to evolve into an 'Indo-Pacific Alliance' in the near future, becoming a direct replica of NATO."

He emphasized that the Russian Ministry of Defense must point out that certain non-regional countries are taking increasingly aggressive actions, which ignore the interests of all countries and create divisions, "Historical experience, including contemporary history, shows that these lines of division may eventually become frontlines."
