As President Trump made significant adjustments to education policies, an increasing number of students living in the United States are turning their eyes to Canada in search of opportunities for higher education.

According to CNN reports, the Trump administration has cut federal funding to many universities and revoked visas for many international students, especially those involved in supporting Palestinian demonstrations. Some have even been placed in deportation proceedings.

At UBC in Vancouver, school officials said that the number of American citizen graduate applications for the 2025 academic year surged by 27% compared to the previous cycle. To cope with the surge in demand, the university briefly reopened its application portal this week and plans to establish a "fast-track admission channel" for American students starting in September.

Gage Averill, Provost of UBC, stated that this wave of applications is directly related to the recent large-scale revocation of international student visas by the U.S. government and the increased monitoring of foreign students' social media content.

"The U.S. is now cracking down on international student visas and has established special agencies to review the social media accounts of foreign students," Averill pointed out.

Not only UBC, but the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo also reported a noticeable increase in attention and applications from American students. Since September 2024, traffic from the U.S. on the University of Waterloo's official website has grown by 15%.

The Trump administration's education policy, which advocates punishing universities that continue to promote diversity or climate science-related projects, has already led some schools into financial crises, with hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds frozen.

Despite the fact that Canada has imposed limits on the total number of international students for the second consecutive year, schools say they will still try to accommodate more American students who wish to come. Officials emphasized that universities must reasonably plan their admission scale while ensuring sufficient housing and support resources are provided.
