Reuters: German Chancellor Merz stated that due to the energy crisis, Germany will keep operating coal-fired power plants longer than originally planned.

"I won't risk our industrial foundation simply because our previous plan to phase out coal is no longer realistic."

Under its climate protection strategy, Germany originally aimed to completely phase out coal power by no later than 2038. Merz emphasized that while he supports this goal, economic considerations should remain the priority.

At the same time, he pointed out that Germany will continue developing renewable energy sources, will not restart nuclear power plants that have already been shut down domestically, but does not rule out participation in research and development of small modular nuclear reactors.

In recent months, Berlin has abandoned several green energy initiatives. German Minister of Economics and Energy Kathrin Reis has also called for greater "flexibility" in achieving the EU’s 2050 carbon neutrality target, sparking criticism both within Germany and abroad.
