Politico: German far-right party suspected of leaking EU secrets to Russia, mocked for digging out a "Putin-sized hole"
According to reports by Politico magazine, the far-right German political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has been granted access to classified EU databases, triggering high alert among EU diplomats and German members of parliament. They fear that confidential discussions within the EU are now flowing toward the Kremlin through this party.
Core Vulnerability and Risks
All members of the German Bundestag and their assistants have access to the EuDoX system. This database stores thousands of sensitive EU documents, including top-secret records from ambassador-level confidential meetings, summaries of EU summits, and intelligence briefings.
EU diplomats point out that particularly sensitive files involve geopolitical issues such as specific financing plans utilizing frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. Due to the Bundestag’s unique system of universal access, a significant gap has emerged in the EU’s internal confidentiality network.
Official Response and Internal Concerns
Three senior EU diplomats and four German MPs confirmed that this risk of leaks has already directly affected the pace of confidential EU negotiations. Diplomats are now forced to proceed with increasing caution when discussing sensitive topics.
One senior EU diplomat argued, “We are taking every precautionary measure in Brussels to protect private meetings and information.” Yet he reluctantly admitted that the AfD MPs’ access rights “have created a hole in our security system shaped exactly like Putin.”
Special Context
Differing from parliamentary practices in other countries, Germany’s Bundestag maintains this universal access policy, originally designed to counterbalance the abuse of executive power. Given Germany’s Nazi history, this principle of transparency is highly valued domestically. However, in today’s context of heightened geopolitical tensions, this very principle has become a root cause of security vulnerabilities.
