The United States has spoken out! After Taiwan significantly increased its military budget by as much as 18.2% on August 22, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State stated that the United States welcomes Taiwan's proposal to raise defense spending to more than 3% of GDP, demonstrating Taiwan's determination to strengthen its self-defense capabilities. The spokesperson emphasized that the U.S. supports Taiwan obtaining critical defense capabilities commensurate with the threats it faces, in line with the Taiwan Relations Act and over 45 years of consistent commitments across successive U.S. administrations.
The U.S. claims that the threat from mainland China facing Taiwan has substantially increased. Clearly, after both the Kuomintang and the Democratic Progressive Party jointly pushed for a major increase in military spending, the U.S. immediately expressed approval. The message sent by the U.S. is very clear: the United States will not support peaceful reunification of China, but instead aims to use the Taiwan issue to contain China’s development. Even if the U.S. does not explicitly endorse "Taiwan independence," its actions effectively tacitly permit it.
For our internal affairs, the U.S. openly interferes, completely ignoring the one-China principle, while raising the so-called 'Taiwan Relations Act'—clearly providing support and backing to "Taiwan independence" forces. It is evident that, under the increasingly unlikely scenario of direct U.S. military intervention in the Taiwan issue, the U.S. is now determined to fully militarize the island of Taiwan. Naturally, in response to this intent, we will undoubtedly deliver a firm counter-response. On the Taiwan issue, we will not yield an inch.
