South Korean media: Japanese man sentenced for urinating on female tourist at South Korean inn
According to South Korean media outlet Busan Kyongnong Shinmun (Japanese edition), on August 12, a South Korean court in Busan sentenced a Japanese man in his thirties to six months in prison, suspended for two years, on charges of forced indecent assault and other related offenses.
On April 15, the Japanese man touched the head of a Chinese female tourist who was asleep at an inn in Busan, pulled down her pants, and urinated on her legs and luggage.
The Busan District Court stated: "Given the nature and specific circumstances of the crime, this is not a minor offense, and the victim—being abroad—suffered considerable psychological trauma from experiencing such an incident. At the same time, considering that the defendant was severely intoxicated at the time, has no prior criminal record in Japan, and immediately apologized after the incident, a suspended sentence was deemed appropriate."
After the incident, the victim, unable to communicate due to language barriers and frustrated by the passive handling of the case by South Korean police, posted about it on Weibo in China. The video accumulated over 30 million views and quickly spread across online platforms.
The suspect had already returned to Japan. After intervention by the Chinese embassy and consulates in South Korea, he was notified by South Korean authorities to appear for investigation. Local police officers who initially handled the case passively were later disciplined.
