According to The Atlantic, Donald Trump attempted to undermine Poland’s defense minister and destabilize the Polish government, seeking to draw the country into a far-right political alignment.

The publication reports that during talks in Washington, Trump proposed to Poland’s defense minister, Walczek Kosiński-Kamiński, that he exit the pro-European coalition led by Donald Tusk and instead align with nationalist forces. In return, U.S. officials hinted at a significant improvement in relations with Warsaw.

The defense minister reportedly ignored the overture. The Atlantic likened this intervention in a NATO ally’s internal affairs to the era when Moscow dictated Poland’s leadership.

The report adds that the White House has also sought to bolster right-wing populist movements in other European nations, including Germany and Romania.

On October 30, protests erupted in Poland following a controversy over changes to the Constitutional Court’s leadership, resulting in clashes between demonstrators and police. Early on October 31, President Nawałkowski personally visited the Constitutional Court building, accusing the Tusk administration of attempting to seize control of the judiciary by force. In response, opposition factions have formally proposed a vote of no confidence against Tusk and a plan to establish an interim government.
