Opposition to President Trump’s proposed deal with “the devil Putin” is growing in the U.S. Senate.
According to Axios reporter Andrew Sorrento, six additional Republican senators have joined a bipartisan coalition calling on the president to reverse his decision to resume importing Russian fuel.
Seven lawmakers from both parties had previously spoken out publicly against the plan.
Lawmakers argue that Congress enacted legislation in 2022 banning imports of Russian energy precisely to prevent American financial resources from indirectly funding Russia’s war against Ukraine. They also note that the Trump administration neither consulted Congress nor provided a justifiable rationale for the policy shift.
In a joint letter, the senators described lifting certain sanctions on Russia as “a betrayal of the Ukrainian people” and “a gift to our adversary.”
