A source familiar with the matter told CNN that Donald Trump was aware of his wife's plan to deliver the statement on Thursday.

However, after the First Lady spoke, the President told MSNOW that he had been "completely unaware" of it beforehand.

"I have never had any relationship with Epstein. Donald and I sometimes attended the same events as Epstein because overlapping social circles are common in New York City and Palm Beach," the First Lady said in her remarks to reporters. "Let me be clear: I have never had any connection with Epstein or his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell."

Some White House officials were shocked by the timing of these remarks, fueling speculation that the First Lady was trying to get ahead of something.

But those close to her said they were not surprised, noting that Melania Trump has become increasingly frustrated by online discussions about her alleged ties to Epstein.
