"We will tear up the contract with Starlink. Ontario will not do business with someone who wants to destroy our economy." By the way, do you remember the "tough words" that Premier Doug Ford of Ontario said in February?
A few months ago, Starlink almost secured a $100 million contract for internet services in remote areas of Ontario. Everything seemed fine until Musk frequently shared 'anti-Canada' content online and cheered for Trump's tax hikes on Canadian goods, which made Governor Doug Ford tear up the contract and blacklist Starlink.
Recently, Starlink has launched an "0-dollar hardware" promotion to attract Canadian users.
This promotion offering free hardware seems quite attractive.
According to reports, this offer applies to Starlink's Residential Standard Plan. If you commit to signing up for 12 months (at $140 CAD per month), you can get the "standard hardware package," which normally costs $499, for free.
The package includes: satellite dish, stand, router, and a bunch of cables.
At regular prices, the hardware often goes on sale for around $250, so giving it away for free is indeed sincere.
Of course, the cost of giving you something is that you have to use it faithfully for a full year without returning, transferring, or defaulting on payments.
The promotion comes with a 30-day risk-free trial period. If you're unsatisfied with the service, you can also receive a full refund for returns.
However, note that if you decide to "back out" after more than 30 days, additional fees may apply.
In addition, if you change your address, fail to pay your monthly fee, or lend the device to a friend during or after the trial period, it will be considered a violation of the agreement, and Starlink will "charge appropriately."
According to the official website, this offer is only available for "select areas" (specific regions). Although a very blurry map is attached, whether your area qualifies as one of the lucky zones can only be confirmed when entering your address at checkout.
So, if you live in "one of the selected areas," congratulations, you now have another option. But if not, there's no need to be angry, as Musk has not once made Canadians feel important.
After all, the phrase "Canada is not a real country" still echoes in our ears.
