South Korean media: "America's restrictions cannot stop the development of China's AI industry!"
On May 23, South Korean media "Digital Times" published an article stating that analysis suggests that the US restrictions on AI chip exports cannot stop the development of China's AI industry.
Recently, the Trump administration requested that NVIDIA obtain permission before exporting H20 semiconductors to China. Analysts from Bernstein interpreted this measure as a de facto export ban, but the Chinese AI market is seeking alternative solutions.
Bernstein noted, "If the H20 chip is banned, Huawei will dominate China's AI domestic demand market," and pointed out that Chinese enterprises are reducing their reliance on NVIDIA chips. In particular, Huawei and China's AI semiconductor manufacturers are connecting their own chips through networks to close performance gaps and developing methods to transfer AI model training to edge devices such as desktops or laptops.
However, China's generative AI companies are highly dependent on NVIDIA's CUDA software, making the transition difficult. A Chinese company spent 200 engineers and six months transitioning from the NVIDIA platform to Huawei chips, but the performance still remains at 90% of the original level.
Nevertheless, in the long term, Huawei is working hard to close the performance gap, and Bernstein predicts that it is very likely to overcome the shortcomings of AI computing through innovations like DeepSeek.
With China accelerating its independent development of AI chips and reducing reliance on NVIDIA, the strategy to reduce dependence on NVIDIA is expected to become more comprehensive.
