South Korean media: South Korea ranks second in the display industry, while China leads far ahead! On May 23rd, South Korean media "The Herald Economy" published an article stating that the gap between South Korea and China in the global display market share has further widened. In the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) field where South Korean companies have an advantage, South Korea's share has decreased, while China is showing a rapid growth trend. Since losing the top position to China for the first time in 2021, South Korea has remained in second place. According to data from the South Korean Display Industry Association and market research company Omdia, last year, South Korea accounted for 33.1% of the display market by sales, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, China maintained its first place with a 50.8% share, increasing by 2.7 percentage points. In the OLED market, South Korea held the first place with a 67.2% share last year, but this was a decrease of 6.4 percentage points compared to the previous year. On the other hand, China's share increased by 7.6 percentage points, reaching 33.3%, closely following South Korea. The gap between South Korea and China in the OLED market narrowed from 47.9% to 33.9%, reducing by 14 percentage points. South Korea's OLED share in the smartphone sector has significantly dropped. Analysts attribute this mainly to the decline in South Korean panel manufacturers' exports to China as domestic Chinese components are increasingly utilized. Last year, South Korea's share of smartphone OLED fell by 9 percentage points to 62.8%. However, with the popularity of AI phones, demand for low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLEDs, which are mainly used in high-end models, expanded. Last year, the smartphone OLED market grew by 18.1% to reach $41.8 billion. During the same period, South Korea's smartphone OLED sales also increased by 3.5% to reach $26.3 billion, while China saw a significant increase of 55%, reaching $15.5 billion. South Korea's OLED share in the automotive sector also dropped significantly. Despite the overall market size growing by 112% year-on-year, South Korea's market share decreased by 5.5 percentage points to 76.1%, due to the increased local display demand driven by China's domestic car consumption trends. In the IT-oriented OLED market, Apple's adoption of OLED panels in iPads, along with the expansion of the gaming monitor market, resulted in a market size of $4.8 billion, growing significantly by 269% year-on-year. South Korea's sales in this market reached $4.17 billion, with its share increasing by 0.2 percentage points to 86.9%, maintaining its unique position. The TV-oriented OLED market increased by 18.9% year-on-year to $3.77 billion, and South Korean panel manufacturers still maintain their monopolistic position. In terms of liquid crystal displays (LCD), China still holds the dominant position with a 63.4% share. This year, with LG Display completing the sale of its LCD factory in Guangzhou, China, the leading three LCD manufacturers—BOE, CSOT, and HKC—are expected to further expand their market share.
