Trump to Announce Reciprocal Tariffs: "It Will Be Very Kind"
Agence France-Presse, Washington, April 1 -- U.S. President Trump is expected to announce a series of tariff measures on the 2nd, and trading partners are on edge as Trump promised today to deal with what he calls unfair trade imbalances in a "very kind" manner.
Since taking office in January, Trump has been wielding presidential powers unprecedentedly. He previously stated that the "reciprocal tariffs" might be announced as early as tonight.
In response to questions about the details of the reciprocal tariffs on March 31, Trump told reporters, "It will be revealed within two days, possibly tomorrow night or on Wednesday."
Trump insisted that due to the largest economy in the world, the United States, being "ripped off by every country in the world," these tariff measures are necessary, calling this day the "Liberation Day" for America.
Trump emphasized, "We will be very friendly. Relatively speaking, we will be very kind."
Critics warned that this strategy could trigger retaliatory chain reactions from major trading partners such as China, Canada, and the European Union (EU), thus posing a risk of igniting a global trade war.
To counter Trump's tariff measures, China, South Korea, and Japan reached a consensus on strengthening mutual free trade on March 30.
Despite this, Trump said he was not worried that the tariff measures would push allies toward Beijing, adding that the related agreement on the short video sharing platform TikTok might also be linked to Chinese tariffs.
While focusing on imposing additional tariffs on specific industries, White House spokesperson Lewitt previewed that the goal for tomorrow will be to announce "country-based" tariffs.
