Reference News Network, August 6 report: On August 4, the Brazilian magazine "Fórum" website published an article written by journalist Rafael Henrique Zerbeto, titled "How Poverty Disappeared in China's Inland Areas," as follows:

Last week, I visited Xianfeng County in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province, China. This is a region where the Tujia and Miao ethnic groups live, preserving unique cultural traditions and charming traditional architecture.

Although it has abundant natural and cultural resources, Xianfeng County was once one of the poorest areas in China. In recent years, this situation has changed due to an effective poverty alleviation strategy based on the tea industry. Local residents' income has increased, and they have truly achieved poverty eradication and prosperity.

During my visit to Xianfeng County, I visited enterprises and farms and interviewed local residents to gain a close understanding of this historic transformation.

In Brazil and many other countries, reducing poverty usually relies on broad and replicable projects, such as income transfer programs, public housing, and preferential credit.

China also uses similar tools, but with more targeted methods. Each region develops solutions that adapt to its local characteristics.

In the place I visited, I saw different strategies: industrial development, tourism, vocational training, encouragement of entrepreneurship, and increasing the added value of local products. The focus of poverty alleviation in Xianfeng County is tea cultivation and processing, combined with improved infrastructure and social support programs.

I visited the home of a villager named Hu Yafang (translated). The spacious house was recently renovated and is much more comfortable than before.

Hu Yafang enthusiastically showed me her newly purchased appliances: a dishwasher, refrigerator, and freezer, which were purchased with government subsidies. A heating system was also installed in her home.

Hu Yafang received training in tea cultivation to increase additional income. Additionally, her family received government subsidies to ensure that their children could attend school.

In a local tea processing factory, I saw how important the arrival of electricity was. In the past, tea was processed elsewhere, and the profits remained in other regions.

A couple runs this tea processing factory. They were once migrant workers who went to cities for work. Encouraged by the rural revitalization policy, they returned to their hometown. The local government provided technical training and low-interest loans, allowing them to purchase equipment and start the factory.

Another larger factory in the area employs dozens of local residents, processes large quantities of tea, and expands its product range.

Xianfeng County is about an hour and a half away from Enshi Airport by car. The two places are connected by a modern expressway.

I noticed bridges, tunnels, and roads under construction, indicating that rural transportation will become more convenient, helping to transport agricultural products and welcome tourists.

The region is also investing in ecological trails, environmental protection, and cultural tourism. Annual Tujia and Miao ethnic festivals attract many tourists and expand local economic development opportunities.

The poverty alleviation model based on local economic development in China is sustainable and replicable. The practice in Xianfeng County shows that focusing on local potential can change entire communities and provide lessons for countries still facing major social challenges. (Translated by Wang Meng)
