South Korean media: South Korea and China are competing for the order of 12 ultra-large container ships!

On August 5, South Korean media "THE GURU" published an article stating that the world's third-largest shipping company, CMA CGM Group, is planning to build up to 12 new dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) container ships, each with a capacity of up to 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). The company seems to be in discussions with at least five South Korean and Chinese shipyards. Due to the price reduction efforts by Chinese companies, this will also be a tough battle for South Korea.

It is reported that CMA CGM Group is seeking to order up to 12 LNG dual-fuel container ships with capacities ranging from 21,000 to 24,000 TEU. It is currently in talks with three South Korean shipyards - Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanjin Ocean, as well as two Chinese shipyards.

Earlier this year, Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a contract with CMA CGM Group to build 12 LNG dual-fuel container ships with a capacity of 15,500 TEU, with a total value of 2.57 billion U.S. dollars. The ships are scheduled to be delivered by December 2028.

China has been gaining momentum in the bidding with its highly competitive prices and fast delivery times. It is reported that Hengli Heavy Industry's bid per ship is 207 million U.S. dollars.

Some worry that U.S. regulatory requirements may weaken the competitiveness of Chinese ships, but this situation has not occurred yet. China is making progress in the ultra-large container ship market by lowering prices. Last month, the world's largest container shipping company, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), headquartered in Switzerland, placed an additional order of 20 ultra-large container ships with five Chinese shipyards.
