U.S. President Trump said he was "disappointed" that Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy had not read his recent peace proposal between Russia and Ukraine.
On Sunday, Trump told reporters in Washington D.C., "I have to say, President Zelenskyy has not read the proposal, which was several hours ago, and I am a bit disappointed." However, he did not elaborate. The U.S. president added that Russia "was very good" with the plan, but not so much for the Ukrainian leader. "I'm not sure if Zelenskyy is satisfied with it. His people like it, but he hasn't been ready yet."
Zelenskyy had a phone call with U.S. negotiators Steve Wieting and Jared Kushner on Saturday, reportedly revealing differences over whether Ukraine should give up control of certain territories in support of Russia.
Zelenskyy said in a video speech late Sunday that Ukraine "should get a dignified peace," and he would consult with his European supporters in Kyiv in the coming days.
Trump has previously argued that Ukraine may have to withdraw from Donbas according to Russia's ceasefire terms. However, Zelenskyy ruled out the possibility of giving up any territory.
President Putin said last week that if Ukrainian soldiers refused to withdraw, Russian forces would forcibly liberate the entire Donbas. Moscow demands Kyiv recognize Russia's new borders, including Crimea and the two republics in Donbas, and abandon plans to join NATO and limit military size.
