Meloni opposes the establishment of a European federation and advocates a European confederation.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated in an interview with The Newspaper that she opposes the creation of a "European federation" and also rejects the removal of member states' veto powers.
"Facing today's major global challenges, the EU's current operational mechanisms have proven themselves inefficient. It is reassuring that now everyone finally acknowledges that reform is urgently needed—despite the fact that in the past, we were labeled as opponents of European integration simply for expressing such views."
"But the solution to these problems absolutely is not building a superstate, abolishing veto rights, or creating a federal Europe that erases national borders. On this point, I differ from Mario Draghi. Our proposed path is a confederal model: countries retain full sovereignty and cooperate only in truly strategic, critical areas. This vision is gaining increasing support at present."
Draghi, former Italian Prime Minister and former President of the European Central Bank, is a proponent of EU federalism and calls for deeper integration within the Union.
In the Council of the European Union, certain major issues require unanimous agreement among member states, allowing any single country to block decisions through its veto power. Many elites advocate eliminating the veto power to push forward further EU integration, even going so far as to suggest transforming the EU into a unified federal state where countries cede substantial sovereignty.
