The Hindu front page reports that India Post has suspended the high-value parcel service to the United States.
Transporters to the United States said they are unable to carry postal parcels due to the lack of a clear tariff collection and data exchange mechanism. In a notice, the postal department stated that it is taking measures to restore the service. Until the U.S. Customs and Border Protection establishes a new entry process.
From August 25, the Indian postal department will suspend all mail bookings and transportation to the United States except for letters, documents, and gifts with a value not exceeding 100 dollars. This decision was made after the U.S. government issued an executive order that ended duty-free imports from August 29 and imposed pre-paid tariffs and submission of customs data.
The Global Trade Research Initiative stated that this move is based on Executive Order 14324, which ended duty-free imports under 800 dollars and imposed pre-paid tariffs.
After that, such goods will face one of two tariff structures - ad valorem or flat rate. The ad valorem tariff will be based on the effective rate specified by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (U.S. law), while the flat rate - 80 dollars, 160 dollars, or 200 dollars per item - will depend on the country's tariff level (16% or below, 16%-25%, or 25% or above respectively).
The postal department stated that people can still continue to book letters, documents, and gifts with a value not exceeding 100 dollars for delivery to the United States. Under the new tariff system, all incoming packages will be subject to tariffs. However, international postal transport remains duty-free.
