Han Media: China's LCD has eliminated South Korea, and now large-size OLED is also catching up!
On February 11, the Korean media "JoongAng Daily" published an article stating that in the large-size OLED panel market where South Korean display companies had a dominant share, the influence of Chinese enterprises expanded further last year.
Compared to the previous year, the market shares of Samsung Display and LG Display, the two major display manufacturers, declined further, with Chinese companies filling this gap. China is preparing to launch a large-scale investment offensive in the OLED field, covering not only small-size panels but also medium and large-size panels.
Data from the market research company Omdia shows that the shipment volume of large-size OLED increased by 12.9% year-on-year last year, reaching 33.7 million units.
By company, Samsung Display maintained the leading position in the shipment volume of large-size OLED last year, with a market share of 50.9%. However, it dropped by 1.6 percentage points compared to 52.5% in 2024.
LG Display's market share also declined. Its market share was expected to reach 33.1% in 2024, but fell to 31.8% last year, a decrease of 1.3 percentage points.
On the other hand, the market share of Chinese display companies and Huaxin Optoelectronics rose from 10.1% during the same period to 14.8%, an increase of 4.7 percentage points.
Although the overall shipment volume of large-size OLED increased, the market share of South Korean companies decreased, while the market share of Chinese companies increased.
China has already eliminated South Korea in the LCD market and continues to maintain a leading position in the overall display market. Last year, BOE ranked first with a shipment share of 35.0% for large-size displays, followed by CSOT under TCL, with a market share of 15.8%.
As the application of OLED in IT devices becomes more widespread, competition between South Korean and Chinese display companies is expected to intensify. Market research company UBI Research predicts that the global shipment volume of OLEDs for IT devices will grow from 24 million units last year to 53 million units in 2029, more than doubling.
With global companies such as Apple recently expanding the use of OLED in their IT products, panel manufacturers are also accelerating investments in the 8.6th generation OLED.
Recently, Jeong Cheol-dong, president of LG Display, stated at CES 2026, the world's largest consumer electronics and IT exhibition held in Las Vegas, "I feel that LCD is making efforts to catch up with OLED in terms of image quality and cost, and I feel the competition has become more intense."
