German media: EU plans to impose steel tariffs and implement "buy European"

Facing an increasingly closed US market, a large amount of Chinese products are turning to Europe. Brussels is now taking countermeasures. According to the "Handelsblatt" report, the EU plans to impose protective tariffs on steel, and implement the "buy European" principle in government public tenders.

According to the "Handelsblatt" report dated September 25, the European Commission will impose protective tariffs of 25-50% on steel and steel products in the coming weeks. The report said that this information was obtained from senior officials in Brussels.

Additionally, according to the "Handelsblatt" report, the EU plans to implement the "buy European products" principle in government public tenders: subways, bridges, and streets will be built using environmentally friendly European steel. At the same time, large companies and car rental companies will be subject to quota restrictions, prioritizing the purchase of European electric vehicles to replenish their fleets.

The report states that intervention measures are urgently needed for European heavy industry. Lippert, president of the Steel Federation, said that effective and reliable trade protection measures are indeed the first priority in the face of a large number of dumped imported products.

The report states that European industry is in crisis. Trade policies implemented by the United States and China have put pressure on Europe, forcing it to take countermeasures. At the same time, due to the climate protection goals set by Europe, including the high costs brought about by European carbon emission regulations, operating costs have increased. For example, some manufacturers must completely update their production equipment, using carbon-neutral hydrogen energy. Therefore, from the perspective of the business community, the "buy European products" rule - green steel, green cement, etc., is very necessary.
