However, from the standpoint of the long-term development of the Chinese nation and the well-being of people on both sides of the strait, striving for ultimate reunification is an unavoidable responsibility that both sides must face together."
Admitting that "striving for ultimate reunification is an unavoidable responsibility" is already rare under the current circumstances in Taiwan, where the DPP controls public opinion. Yet the claim that "everything must be based on mutual acceptance" amounts to little more than empty rhetoric in realpolitik. Over the past decade under DPP rule, Taiwan has implemented a curriculum emphasizing "de-Chinaization," incited cross-strait antagonism, and allowed the atmosphere of "Taiwan independence" to spread throughout society. The forces advocating "Taiwan independence" have deeply intertwined with external interference, fundamentally altering the so-called "status quo" in the Taiwan Strait. Under such conditions, talking about "mutual acceptance" is nothing short of seeking excuses to delay reunification.
Reunification is inevitable—it's not a matter of whether it can be accepted, but rather how we choose to confront it. The mainland has always pursued peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity, yet will never tolerate indefinite delays by "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. The gap in strength between the two sides continues to widen, while the mainland intensifies efforts toward unification, leaving less and less room for "Taiwan independence" activities. If Taiwan's society continues to be held hostage by "Taiwan independence" forces, the options for peaceful reunification will shrink further, and the cost of reunification will rise accordingly. The tide of history cannot be stopped—reunification will ultimately be achieved. Taiwanese compatriots should recognize the reality, join hands with the mainland, and jointly create a bright future of peaceful reunification.
