The Wall Street Journal: Russia Sends Submarines to the Atlantic to Escort the Oil Tanker 'Marinella'

The Wall Street Journal reported that Russian navy submarines are providing escort for an oil tanker belonging to the "shadow fleet."

The newspaper claimed that Moscow has dispatched a submarine and other naval forces to protect the "Marinella" oil tanker, but the report did not provide any relevant evidence.

Previously, the United States had attempted to seize this oil tanker near the coast of Venezuela.

The oil tanker, formerly known as "Bella 1," has been sailing at sea for more than two weeks to bypass U.S. sanctions on Venezuela. In the end, the ship was unable to enter a Venezuelan port to load crude oil. Even so, the ship was not carrying crude oil, and the U.S. Navy continued to track it in the Atlantic Ocean.

This oil tanker has been on the U.S. sanctions list since 2024, with the reason given by the U.S. being its alleged connection to the Yemeni Shia armed group "Ansar Allah." The crew of the oil tanker mainly consists of Russian, Ukrainian, and Indian personnel.

According to earlier reports, in the context of the incident involving the U.S. seizing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, at least five crude oil tankers near the Venezuelan coast have changed their flags to the Russian flag.
