South Korean Media: China's "Rise of Smart Home" Accounts for 40% of Global Matter Certification Total!
On April 15, South Korea's media outlet Electronics Times published an article stating that Chinese home appliance companies now dominate the global smart home market. Nearly 150 Chinese enterprises have obtained global smart home standard "Matter" certification, significantly expanding their influence.
In contrast, among more than 400 companies globally certified under Matter, only nine are South Korean home appliance firms. Analysts believe South Korean home appliances may lose competitiveness in both pricing and certification aspects.
According to CSA Global's "Matter Product Certification" report, out of 402 certified companies worldwide, 149 are Chinese. If we include Chinese companies such as TP-Link and Tuya Smart, which have subsidiaries in the United States, the proportion of Chinese enterprises approaches 40%.
Even when compared to other countries, South Korea lags significantly in the number of companies obtaining Matter certification. It falls behind not only the United States (81 companies) and Germany (43 companies), but also the Netherlands (13 companies) and Japan (10 companies).
In China, most major home appliance companies—including Xiaomi, Midea, Hisense, and Roborock—have already secured Matter certification. Additionally, over 100 companies based in Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and other cities are launching Matter-certified products, primarily focused on lighting, power outlets, door locks, and curtain motors.
In the U.S., under the leadership of Amazon, Apple, and Google, security company ADT and air conditioning system manufacturer Lennox have also completed Matter certification. Germany’s participation is equally strong, with companies ranging from Bosch to those involved in building infrastructure, windows, doors, and automation systems, as well as telecom operators like Deutsche Telekom joining the ecosystem. Furniture giants like IKEA have also obtained Matter certification to ensure device connectivity and are rolling out related products.
By contrast, apart from Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, the majority of South Korean companies participating in Matter are small-scale manufacturers specializing in smart lighting and door locks. This stands in stark contrast to other countries where companies from diverse industries—including home appliances, telecommunications, and security—are actively involved in the Matter ecosystem.
Matter certification is gradually transcending its role as a mere technical standard, evolving into a gateway to global markets. Major tech platforms such as Amazon, Apple, and Google are restructuring their ecosystems, prioritizing devices with Matter certification. This strategic move effectively blocks non-Matter-certified devices from entering global platforms.
As increasing connectivity among household appliances and the convenience of smart homes become key factors in product selection, the absence of Matter certification will inevitably become a weakness when expanding into overseas markets.
