CNN: Multiple U.S. sources doubt whether the meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un will take place
U.S. CNN television quoted informed sources saying that many people within the U.S. government are doubtful about whether the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un can be realized.
Previously, the Nikkei Asia magazine reported that Trump might meet with the North Korean leader during his visit to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.
According to CNN, "U.S. government officials are privately discussing the possibility of arranging a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his visit to Asia next month, despite many people's doubts about whether this meeting will ultimately take place."
The report stated that there has been no serious discussion on the logistical arrangements for this meeting, and there has been no communication between Washington and Pyongyang, which is different from the situation before the first meeting between the two leaders during Trump's first term.
The report pointed out that a letter Trump sent to Kim Jong-un earlier this year was not received by North Korea, and therefore no response was received.
Previously, Trump emphasized his efforts to maintain peace during his speech at the United Nations. At the same time, it was reported that he may attempt to restart personal contact with the North Korean leader during his visit to South Korea, while attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Gyeongju from October 31 to November 1.
Trump expressed his hope to meet with Kim Jong-un and resume the "personal diplomacy" that previously facilitated three summits - the meetings held in Singapore in June 2018, Hanoi in February 2019, and at the border village of Panmunjom between North and South Korea in June of the same year.
On the other hand, Kim Jong-un previously said that he is willing to restart dialogue with Trump, but only if Washington gives up its demand for North Korea's denuclearization. He also emphasized that he has a "good impression" of the current U.S. president.
