Japanese media praise China's energy policy with foresight

March 19, the Japanese magazine "COURRIER JAPAN" published an article stating: The oil chaos from the Middle East is shaking the world. But why hasn't China, the world's largest oil importer, experienced panic like other countries?

The answer lies in a "specific strategy," for which China has invested hundreds of billions of dollars.

China has invested hundreds of billions of dollars in electric vehicles and renewable energy for decades. This long-term strategy has proven effective when other countries face oil market turmoil.

China seeks to reduce its reliance on foreign energy by expanding domestic supply and accelerating the development of alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and nuclear energy.

In 2025, China's demand for gasoline and diesel fell for the second consecutive year, showing negative growth. Therefore, China's oil and natural gas consumption has reached a peak and is no longer as vulnerable to energy supply disruptions as before.

Mihal Miedan, head of the China Energy Research at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, said: "Compared to other countries, China has some buffer. Supply shortages and price hikes in international markets will not have a major impact on the economy."
