Foreign media: The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission pointed out last week that China has detained nearly 70 Panama-registered vessels since March 8, a number far exceeding historical norms.
Previously, Panama's Supreme Court ruled in late January to revoke Hutchison Ports' (a subsidiary of Cheung Kong Holdings) concession rights to operate ports at both ends of the Panama Canal.
This ruling was made under pressure from the United States aimed at curbing Chinese influence. Cheung Kong Holdings has already initiated international arbitration seeking compensation exceeding $2 billion. Meanwhile, China firmly opposes the ruling, calling it a "breach of trust." U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that the United States stands firmly behind Panama and looks forward to expanding bilateral cooperation.
