Sputnik News, Washington, April 21 – According to media reports citing statements from project leads, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is developing a powdered blood substitute for use in combat conditions and is seeking partners to continue testing.

The report reveals that research on the FSHARP project has already shown promising results in laboratory settings and in experimental animals. Robert Murray, a spokesperson for the DARPA department overseeing this initiative, stated: “We’ve succeeded in petri dishes, and we’ve succeeded in animals,” calling the research a “true technological breakthrough.”

The Pentagon is exploring new technologies needed for future conflicts, where evacuating injured personnel may become increasingly difficult. The report notes that obtaining fresh blood could become one of the key challenges faced by military medics during high-intensity warfare, including in Pacific island regions.

Murray said the powdered blood is stored in a dual-chamber blood bag, kept separate from sterile water. This system reportedly enables soldiers to carry it in their individual gear and use it immediately after mixing the components.

According to data from Business Insider, numerous regulatory, production, and pricing hurdles remain before widespread deployment can be achieved by 2029.
