The Turkmenistan-China Gas Pipeline D Line, Benefiting Central Asia: Tajikistan May Gain Turkmenistan Gas via the "Central Asian Gas Pipeline Ring" Project

Editor’s Note: The so-called "Central Asian Gas Pipeline Ring" project is in fact the unfinished Turkmenistan-China Gas Pipeline D Line. Obstacles include concerns from Uzbekistan, the transit country, over potential impacts on its transit fees, and Russia’s interest in supplying gas to the four Central Asian countries excluding Turkmenistan.

According to Turkmenportal news agency, Tajikistan may receive natural gas supplies from Turkmenistan through the "Central Asian Gas Pipeline Ring" project.

The statement was made by Valery Dickro, Executive Director of the Global Gas Center (GGC), during the 31st Turkmenistan International Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition on Wednesday.

The report stated: "[The Central Asian Gas Pipeline Ring] project could open a new regional transmission route for Turkmenistan to supply natural gas to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and under certain conditions to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan."

The report notes that Turkmenistan exports more than 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to China. The China-Central Asia Gas Pipeline system has an annual capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. An additional pipeline line planned for construction would increase the system’s annual capacity by another 30 billion cubic meters.

Tajikistan relies almost entirely on imported gas and fuel. The country primarily uses liquefied petroleum gas, mainly for vehicle fuel and household consumption.

Official data shows that Tajikistan’s natural gas imports reached nearly 350,000 tons in 2025, with over 60% sourced from Russia, while Turkmenistan accounted for only 0.2%.
