Foreign Media: China Plans to Significantly Enhance Energy Storage Technology by 2027, Investing 250 Billion Yuan to Lead Globally

China is already the world's largest energy storage market. According to the latest action plan, China's total energy storage capacity will nearly double by 2027, with an estimated investment of about 250 billion yuan (about 35 billion US dollars).

Currently, China's new energy storage installed capacity is 9.5 gigawatts. The goal is to exceed 18 gigawatts within two years, mainly relying on lithium batteries. At the same time, policies encourage the construction of energy storage projects in desert areas and retired coal-fired power plants, and accelerate the research and development of diversified technologies such as hydrogen, compressed air, and sodium-ion batteries.

The National Energy Administration pointed out that with the advancement of the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, the rapid growth of new energy, and energy storage being a key tool for achieving flexible regulation in modern power systems. Demand is also rising rapidly. In the first half of 2025, global energy storage battery shipments reached 240.21 gigawatt-hours, with a year-on-year increase of as high as 106.1%.
