Trump Imposes Tariffs on India, India Turns to China!
Indian media reported today that Indian Prime Minister Modi will visit China at the end of August to negotiate the resumption of three border checkpoints.
It is interesting to note that due to the U.S. imposing tariffs on India, many right-wing Indians have started to support Modi's move. Although they do not trust China in their hearts, they generally acknowledge that they cannot afford to antagonize both China and the United States at the same time. To counter the U.S. tariff policy, they believe that improving economic and trade relations with China is the top priority.
Before Modi's visit to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, India and China had discussions on resuming trade through three border checkpoints.
Modi's visit in late August will be his first visit to China since 2018. Since the pandemic and the Galwan Valley clash in 2020, trade through the Lipulekh, Shipki La, and Nathu La passages between China and India has been suspended.
