According to a July 26 report by Japanese media outlet Asahi TV: Defense Minister Shigeru Koizumi's statement regarding "beginning discussions on acquiring nuclear weapons" has triggered protests within Japan, especially among citizens from areas that suffered atomic bombings in the past.

Koizumi maintained his stance amid controversy, stating: "My remarks were about general principles of national defense policy, emphasizing the importance of discussing policies aimed at protecting citizens' lives and peaceful living conditions, while carefully explaining the rationale to the public."
