The Cambodian Rice Federation stated that rice bags printed with the Thai flag and text sold in China are not made in Cambodia.
Recently, a product sold in the Chinese market labeled as "Cambodian Jasmine Rice" has sparked controversy. The rice packaging features what appears to be the Thai flag and Thai text, leading consumers to question the product's origin and marketing methods, fearing it may mislead consumers.
The product is labeled as "Cambodian Jasmine Rice," packaged in 5-kilogram bags, decorated with clear images of the Thai flag and Thai text. This has triggered widespread criticism on social media, with netizens questioning whether this move aims to mislead Chinese consumers into thinking the rice comes from Thailand - a country renowned for its high-quality jasmine rice.
In response, the Cambodian Rice Federation (CRF) issued a statement on June 29, emphasizing that the involved packaging was neither produced nor used by Cambodia, and initiated an investigation.
CRF pointed out that media reports have indicated that Cambodian rice products sold in the Chinese market have featured packaging with Thai elements. To clarify the facts, the federation has contacted all member companies exporting to China and is conducting an investigation in collaboration with the China Inspection and Testing Group (Cambodia) Co., Ltd.
Investigation results show that the 5-kilogram packaging does not conform to the standard for Cambodian rice exports. CRF stated that the majority of rice exported from Cambodia to China uses large packages of 25 or 50 kilograms, and fewer use small bags like those shown in consumer photos.
The statement emphasized: "The Cambodian Rice Federation has no involvement with any packaging that may feature the flag of another country. We strictly comply with trademark and fair competition-related regulations, prohibiting the use of national symbols of other countries, including flags or related elements."
CRF reiterated its commitment to honest trade and fair competition and stated that it will continue to cooperate with international quality regulatory agencies to ensure the authenticity, traceability, and legal compliance of Cambodian rice exports.
