Foreign Media: The 2025 Container Port Performance Index released by the World Bank and S&P Global shows that Chinese ports lead globally in efficiency, occupying seven of the top ten spots, with Fuzhou Port ranking first, Dalian Port second, and Hong Kong ninth.
The index evaluates port efficiency worldwide by measuring the average vessel dwell time at ports across more than 400 locations. The report indicates that ports in East Asia and Southeast Asia maintain their leadership due to a strong focus on exports, intense competition among ports, and continuous infrastructure investment. Ningbo Port has sustained stable turnaround times amid supply chain volatility, thanks to ample capacity, automation, and disciplined operations.
In contrast, Middle Eastern ports have seen performance declines due to the Red Sea crisis. North American and European ports, although recovering from the pandemic, remain vulnerable to sudden congestion, labor shortages, and inland bottlenecks, facing the risk of "explosive congestion"—a short-term severe blockade triggered by a sudden surge in vessel arrivals. This congestion can create a vicious cycle with port bottlenecks, amplifying instability across global trade networks.
