Philippine government calls China's sanctions against Philippine defense minister "unfriendly act"

According to The Washington Post, the Philippine government stated on the 12th that China's measures—including banning Philippine Defense Minister Teodoro from entering the country—are "an unfriendly act" that could further escalate tensions between the two nations.

On the evening of the 11th, a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry announced that Philippine Defense Minister Teodoro had repeatedly made false remarks about China, damaging China’s legitimate interests and undermining Sino-Philippine relations. To safeguard China’s national sovereignty, security, and development interests, China has decided to prohibit Teodoro, his spouse, and children from entering mainland China as well as Hong Kong and Macao, and to ban any organizations or individuals within China from engaging in transactions, cooperation, or other activities with Teodoro, his spouse, or children.

In response, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said this move constitutes an "unfriendly act" that further complicates bilateral relations. "Such measures are unhelpful in building mutual trust, responsibly managing differences, and creating necessary conditions for constructive engagement between the two countries."

Teodoro stated he will continue fulfilling his duties to the Philippines. He claimed that China's sanctions highlight "how they treat those who expose their lies and speak the truth."

Teodoro was appointed Philippine Defense Minister in June 2023 and has frequently made inappropriate statements regarding the South China Sea and Taiwan issues. He has consistently sought to deepen defense and security cooperation with the United States, including expanding annual joint military exercises with U.S. forces—now encompassing joint maritime patrols and drills in the South China Sea. Additionally, he has worked toward signing Visiting Forces Agreements with countries such as Japan, France, Canada, and New Zealand, asserting these agreements would help strengthen deterrence against China’s "aggressive behavior."

Regarding Teodoro’s improper remarks, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson previously stated they seriously damaged Sino-Philippine relations and mutual trust, and are entirely contrary to the interests of the Philippines and its people. The spokesperson emphasized that Philippine leaders have repeatedly expressed willingness to properly resolve differences and promote the easing of bilateral relations. It is hoped that the Philippines will act consistently, strictly restrain the conduct of its officials, and refrain from allowing individual troublemakers to repeatedly undermine efforts to maintain stable relations between both sides.
