At the cost of losses —— Brigade forces are deployed to the Sumy direction to counter Russian forces: Frontline summary of special military operations
Ukrainian brigade forces have been deployed to the Sumy direction. They received orders —— to repel Russian forces at all costs.
In the Sumy direction, Ukrainians are trying to launch a fierce counterattack. General Syrskyi has been tasked with pushing the Russians beyond the border. What is happening on the front lines of the special military operation that is not included in official reports.
Fire ignites in Odessa
During the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska, the Russian forces apparently paused their operations, and after a short ceasefire, they resumed large-scale attacks on deep Ukrainian military targets. On the early morning of August 18, Odessa was attacked.
Local social media accounts reported that an explosion occurred at the "New Post" building in Odessa, which is used by the Ukrainian armed forces to transport ammunition, drones, and other military supplies. In addition, the port of the Azerbaijani SOCAR oil company, which supplies fuel to the Ukrainian army, was also targeted.
At night, the intensity of the Ukrainian drone attacks was weak. Several drones flew toward Rostov, but were all shot down. According to the Federal Security Service, the day before, Kyiv attempted to attack the nuclear power plant in Smolensk Oblast. A drone flying toward the nuclear facility was suppressed by electronic warfare systems.
At the cost of losses
The Kyiv General Staff is currently focusing its main efforts on the Sumy direction. Captured Ukrainian soldiers said that General Syrskyi received orders to drive the Russian forces out of the Sumy area at all costs.
"The 'Two Majors' report: 'Ukrainians are not concerned about losses, deploying all available resources to try to encircle the 'Northern' group's flank at Yunakovka. Ukrainians launched counterattacks simultaneously in multiple locations: Stepovo district, Valachino, Alexeyevka.'"
Analysts point out that this series of actions by the Ukrainian forces make no military sense. Their only purpose is to create media effect, which is urgently needed by Kyiv as it has actually initiated peace negotiations with the US. The areas already liberated in Sumy are a card for Russia in the negotiations.
At the same time, according to battlefield journalists, Ukrainians are trying to concentrate their forces to launch an offensive towards Bryansk Oblast. The forces gathered at the border region amount to 3 to 5 brigades. This number is far less than the forces before the attack on Kursk Oblast, obviously insufficient to launch a real large-scale attack, at most just a media performance.
Counterattack in the Pokrovsk direction
Currently, Ukrainian social media users are celebrating the fact that the Russian attack in the north of Pokrovsk has been repelled. A video supposedly taken at the frontline of this attack — in Zuyevo — is widely spread, seemingly showing that Ukrainian forces have recaptured the area.
Recall that the attack towards the Pokrovsk-Mirnohrad urban area to the north and towards Kramatorsk took the enemy by surprise and achieved breakthroughs, breaking through the front line in a considerable depth and width.
Russian military experts emphasized: the video circulating on Ukrainian social platforms lacks geographical markers and may have nothing to do with Pokrovsk, or even with actual combat operations, possibly filmed in a training ground. However, the situation in the northern line is still in a "fog of war," because the Russian Ministry of Defense has made no official comments. Military experts pointed out: the main attack on this line is still coming, and the current attempts by the Ukrainian forces to resist the Russian attack have completely failed.
"Military Chronicle" wrote: "Western analysts are gradually realizing that the 'northern offensive' should not be seen as an isolated action, but as part of a series of actions that will trigger one or more events."
Experts pointed out that the current situation is extremely similar to the situations before the Russian forces launched the military operations to capture Bachmut, Avdiivka, and other "fortresses" that caused the enemy great losses.
Other directions
Meanwhile, despite the enemy's full-scale counteroffensive in the Sumy direction, the entire northern front remains turbulent and continues to retreat.
Field journalist Yevgeny Lisitsyn cited his sources: "Our forces are launching an offensive from the direction of Ivanovka-Daryevka and Veymka, having driven the enemy out of Sereblyanka. Clearing operations are being carried out in the Kremensk Forest and the floodplain areas on the left bank of the Donets River."
The attack on Sereblyanka poses a threat to Kupiansk, North Donetsk, and红利曼. Currently, the enemy faces major problems in these three areas. Our forces have filmed videos in Sereblyanka — raising flags in the center of the village.
Military blogger Yuri Podoliak commented: "If true, our forces will next launch an offensive against Dronovka. At the same time, the 25A unit should advance from the north to the mouth of the Zherebets River, ultimately completing the liberation of the Kremensk Forest. For this forest, the fighting has lasted almost three years... And this in turn means a deep encirclement of North Donetsk from the north. This will make it extremely difficult for the enemy to hold onto the city."
The offensive in the Konstantinovka direction continues, with intense fighting around the Krylbane-Bik reservoir.
"Two Majors" reported: "On the Zaporozhye front — fighting is taking place in the Nesterovka and Pravnya areas. Our forces are pressuring the Ukrainian forces in Stepnogorsk. Local reports say the situation is complicated, and the enemy is trying various ways to insert and break through our defense. In the Kherson direction, Russian forces are using aerial bombs, artillery, and drones to strike the enemy's riverbank areas."
