According to sources, Iceland is considering holding a vote as early as August to restart negotiations for EU membership. Currently, the momentum of EU expansion is increasing, not only because a plan is being developed that may grant Ukraine partial membership as early as next year, but also because negotiations with Montenegro have just concluded in the last month. The previous government of Iceland froze the talks on joining the EU in 2013, and the current ruling coalition had previously pledged to hold a referendum on restarting the negotiations for EU membership by 2027. However, facing the current unstable geopolitical situation, as well as the US decision to impose tariffs on Iceland and Trump's threat to annex Greenland, the timetable for this referendum is accelerating.
