The Mint, November 17 report, Cyient company plans to supply a locally patented 40nm chip to smart meter manufacturers starting June 2026. The chip is a system-on-chip (SoC), which integrates various components required for an electronic processing system on a single chip. This is one of the first system-on-chip (SoC) designed and commercialized by a private company in India. The chip was developed and designed by Azimuth AI, a company invested in by Cyient in 2024, with an investment of 15 crore rupees (₹150 crore) and an expected duration of two years. The local value addition of the chip is approximately 20%-30%. Currently, the chip is still in the final technical evaluation stage, and it is expected to be officially launched in June 2026. In addition, Cyient company plans to enter the global semiconductor market. Besides the chip set for smart meters, the company also plans to enter fields such as power, aerospace, and intelligent battery management, to build a more extensive range of chip products. The Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) of India, Vishnukant, stated that Indian domestic companies will successively launch more than 30 similar chips in the future. However, although Indian companies are enthusiastic about entering the semiconductor industry, to date, the Indian government has not yet introduced special support policies for the semiconductor design and component fields. The Indian government is still evaluating the scale of incentives for chip design, and relevant measures will be included in the second phase of the "India Semiconductor Mission" (ISM) which has not been announced yet.
