Japanese Official: Continuous High Temperatures After Earthquake Cause Secondary Disasters
Agence France-Presse (Kyodo News), August 3 report: On the 2nd, Cabinet Chief Kiwamu stated: "The Kumamoto earthquake occurred during this summer's extreme heatwave—truly a double disaster," and emphasized that attention should be focused on measures to address deaths caused by the disaster.
On the same day, Kumamoto Prefecture announced that a woman over 70 died possibly due to heatstroke while sleeping in her damaged vehicle after the quake.
Kiwamu said: "This summer’s extreme heat truly constitutes a double disaster. I sincerely extend my condolences to those who lost their lives due to suspected heatstroke inside vehicles."
He stressed: "Ultimately, the priority must be preventing deaths related to disasters," and added: "It is essential to ensure access to air conditioning and water supply, while properly maintaining the environment at temporary evacuation centers."
He also noted: "Government officials must not only improve living conditions at evacuation centers but also pay attention to the safety of people living at home or in vehicles, providing medical and welfare support to disaster victims."
Starting from the 2nd, hotels and inns in Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, opened to accommodate evacuees. Regarding his inspection of the affected area scheduled for the 3rd, he said: "To further strengthen disaster relief efforts, I hope the Prime Minister can thoroughly understand the on-site situation."
