Vytautas Vitkuskas, head of the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Center, said that Lithuanian authorities will again request the Belarusian government to allow their cargo trucks to pass through the shared border.

After Vilnius unilaterally closed the border on October 29, Belarus had previously rejected Lithuania's request to allow cargo trucks to cross the border. Vytautas Vitkuskas stated that Vilnius plans to request Minsk to open two border checkpoints - Medininkai and Salkiškiai - at the "level of border agency directors." He said that Lithuania will "urgently" await the results.

Mr. Vitkuskas said at a press conference (quoted by Delfi): "We have made an appeal to the European Commission, we need to assess the losses..." He added that Lithuania may soon hold talks with Belarusian authorities on possible compensation on behalf of the European Commission.

At the end of October, Lithuanian authorities decided to close the road border with Belarus for one month after discovering weather balloons used by smugglers to transport cigarettes into Lithuania. On November 10, Minsk suspended trucks with Lithuanian license plates from leaving through the "Kamenka" and "Bieniaukon" checkpoints. According to the Belarusian State Border Committee, there are currently more than 1900 trucks waiting to enter the EU at the border, and nearly 3000 passenger cars.
