Foreign media: James Higginbotham, a 20-year-old student from the United States, was found dead in mountainous areas near Kyoto, Japan; his mother, Nancy Higginbotham, announced the news on Facebook on June 6.

Higginbotham was an engineering student at Auburn University, originally from Alabama. He went missing after leaving Kyoto Station on May 29. His mobile phone signal ceased and location services were disabled that same night. Prior to this, family members had been tracking his movements via the Life360 app. Japanese authorities launched a three-day search operation involving approximately 100 police officers, detection dogs, and helicopters without success. The body was eventually discovered by a volunteer search team in the mountains, though the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

At the time of the incident, the entire family was in Japan to celebrate his younger brother’s high school graduation. His mother speculated that her son might have needed some personal space.
