Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov Issues Strong Warning: NATO Aims to Turn the Arctic into a "New Battlefield"
Moscow, arctic.ru website — In an article written for the Arctic portal, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov harshly pointed out that leaders of NATO member states intend to open a "new front" in the Arctic to contain Russia's development. Western politicians have not even bothered to conceal this ambition.
Lavrov stated that NATO's move is aimed not only at containing Russia but also at its like-minded partners. He emphasized that military activities by NATO in the far northern regions are increasingly frequent, significantly raising the risk of catastrophic accidents.
"NATO countries, and indeed the entire military alliance, are systematically promoting militarization in the region and creating hotbeds of international tension there," Lavrov concluded.
The Russian foreign minister also noted that the West has long harbored the idea of "keeping Russia under close watch," but never as an equal partner. Even during Russia's time in the Group of Eight (G8), Moscow was never regarded as a formal member of the organization.
