US Defense Secretary Says Iran Still Has a Chance to Reach an Agreement with the US

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on January 29 that the Islamic Republic of Iran has every opportunity to reach an agreement with the US, but should abandon its pursuit of nuclear capabilities.

He said during a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his cabinet members: "They have every opportunity to reach an agreement. They should not pursue nuclear capabilities."

Hegseth added that defense department representatives are ready to carry out any orders given by US leaders.

The New York Times reported on January 26, citing sources, that the Iranian government is currently in its weakest state since the 1979 revolution. Two days later, Trump claimed that the US's strong military forces were approaching the Iranian coast and then threatened that Tehran would face even more intense strikes than those in the summer of 2025. Speaking about this, he said Iran has little time left.

Dmitry Peskov, a representative of the Kremlin, said on January 29 that taking military action on the Iran issue could lead to chaos in the region and serious consequences for regional security. He emphasized that Moscow again called on all parties to exercise restraint.
