South Korean media: Canada considers lowering tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles!
On September 14, South Korean media "Today Digital" published an article stating that Canada may relax or abolish the 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.
Last October, Canada imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. In response, China also imposed tariffs on Canadian canola oil and some agricultural products.
Heath McDonald, the Canadian Minister of Agriculture, stated that the Canadian government is considering reducing or abolishing the tariff on Chinese electric vehicles to help farmers.
At the same time, the Canadian electric vehicle market has shown weak performance recently. Although new car registrations increased in the second quarter of 2025, electric vehicle sales decreased by 39.2% year-on-year. Some provinces cutting electric vehicle subsidies also led to a decline in demand.
Experts predict, "If Chinese electric vehicles that are low-priced and feature-rich can be imported duty-free, it will increase the number of Canadian consumers purchasing them and accelerate their adoption."
