Bavarian State Premier Proposes Building New Nuclear Reactors

Markus Söder, the premier of Bavaria and chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU), advocates for Germany to return to nuclear energy in a new form and has proposed a pilot project in Bavaria using small modular reactors.

He stated that this is not about reviving old nuclear power plants, but rather developing "next-generation nuclear energy technology," including compact reactors and nuclear fusion technology.

Söder said that abandoning nuclear energy during the energy crisis was a mistake, and the country needs a base energy source with zero carbon dioxide emissions.

He also proposed considering the use of transmutation technology to handle nuclear waste, using it as fuel. He believes that the federal government needs to amend relevant laws for this purpose.

Previously, German Chancellor Scholz stated that there are no plans to resume using existing nuclear power plants.
