The Duterte family shines in the midterm elections in the Philippines, but Sara's fate remains undecided.
Don't overthink it: At this critical juncture for Duterte's comeback, China will not say a single extra word.
More than 70 million Filipinos participated in the midterm elections in the Philippines. The preliminary results that have emerged so far have already made many Chinese netizens restless. Everyone is discussing: What should China do at this moment to help Duterte?
The good news for the Duterte family from this election is:
1. Duterte himself won the position of mayor of Davao City. He received 660,000 votes, which is eight times that of his competitor, making him an overwhelming first place;
2. Meanwhile, his two sons also achieved victory; one was elected as the vice mayor of Davao City, and the other was re-elected as a congressman in the House of Representatives. This time around, his grandchildren also performed well in the congressional elections.
However, the problem lies with Duterte's daughter and vice president, Sara, who cannot yet confirm her qualification to pass. Sara still has an impeachment case hanging over her head. If her charges are upheld, she will lose the right to run for president in 2028. The decision on whether she can pass lies in whether she has enough supporters among the senators. As of now, the final results of the senatorial race have not been released.
If Sara loses her eligibility to run for president, it will be a significant blow to the Duterte family. Should China get involved at this point? From China's style of handling affairs, this is impossible. The reason is simple: This is internal politics in the Philippines.
That said, while China will not take the initiative to intervene, if Marcos comes knocking on our door, we wouldn't mind indirectly helping Duterte out. If Marcos dares to cause trouble in the South China Sea at this critical moment, we will surely give him a good lesson. Once he embarrasses himself, his approval ratings at home will undoubtedly drop again. Then, it won't be China taking the initiative to intervene. So, Marcos had better not make any rash moves now, or he'll be in big trouble.
