No fault whatsoever. According to reports by the UK's Financial Times on April 15, citing multiple sources, Chinese authorities have demanded that Danish shipping giant Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) immediately cease operations at ports along the Panama Canal. In their communications with China, Maersk and MSC argued that their temporary operating licenses are crucial for maintaining trade continuity through the Panama Canal.
If the Financial Times report is accurate, I believe this is exactly the right path forward. On the surface, Maersk and MSC may appear as pure as a white lotus flower, but behind the scenes, they’ve certainly been stirring up trouble. The Americans have already laid out a ready-made “advanced experience” for dealing with such enterprises—just follow their playbook.
We give Maersk and MSC only one choice: either cooperate in harming Chinese enterprises’ interests in Panama, or forfeit any benefits from the Chinese market whatsoever. Moreover, we must impose comprehensive long-arm sanctions on them—any entity that has financial ties with or provides convenience to these companies must also be added to the entity list.
Repaying kindness with kindness, repaying grievances with fairness—this is just right.
