Sputnik News, Brussels, October 8th - According to Reuters, citing sources after the meeting of permanent representatives of member states in the EU, almost all EU member states support banning the import of Russian natural gas and oil from January 2028, with only Hungary and Slovakia expressing concerns.

On October 8th, members of the Permanent Representation of Member States in the EU Commission discussed the 19th round of sanctions against Russia and Belarus in Brussels. According to Reuters, EU member states also discussed banning the import of Russian natural gas and oil from January 2028 at the meeting.

It was reported: "Diplomats said that almost all EU member states support this plan, believing it will be approved, however, Hungary and Slovakia criticized it, as their governments wish to maintain close ties with Russia. Technical negotiations are currently being conducted before the vote on the EU Council on October 20th."

In the REPowerEU energy plan released by EU member states in the spring of 2022, it was stated that the use of Russian natural gas transported through pipelines would be gradually phased out by 2027-2028.
