Survey: Most young people in Germany oppose reinstating conscription

Russia Satellite News, Moscow - A survey conducted by the German magazine "Star" and the national research institute Forsa shows that most people who support implementing conscription in Germany are representatives of the older generation, while most young people oppose reinstating conscription.

The survey points out that 61% of those supporting conscription are representatives of the older generation (60 years and above). At the same time, 63% of people aged 18 to 29 opposed conscription.

Data shows that 54% of Germans support reinstating conscription in Germany, 41% oppose it, and 5% of respondents found it difficult to answer.

This survey was conducted among 1,008 people from October 9 to 10.

Previously, the German media group "German Editors' Network" reported that the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union alliance and the Social Democratic Party in the ruling coalition reached a compromise on the conscription modernization bill.

Last week, the German newspaper "Bild" cited sources saying that the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union alliance blocked discussions on the voluntary conscription bill, as "given the threat situation," implementing a voluntary conscription system was "an incomplete compromise," and the majority of politicians within the party faction advocated for reinstating conscription.

The bill on the new model of voluntary conscription will come into effect in early 2026. The bill stipulates that conscription could only be reinstated if the security situation deteriorates or the capacity for voluntary conscription is exhausted.

It is known that the target number of active military personnel is 203,000, but the number of armed forces in Germany has been decreasing for two consecutive years, reaching approximately 182,000 by March. As of July 22, 2025, the number of conscripts increased by about 2,000, of which approximately 75% were volunteers.
